Jeff Wilhelm Coming in September

I've never read his books, but I've heard good things. The WNYWP, along with a few other organizations, are bringing this guy to town. Since we work at a vocational (yet comprehensive) high school, maybe some people would be interested in checking out his book Reading Don't Fix No Chevy's: Literacy in the Lives of Young Men. God knows we have enough young men. We could do our own lit circle thingy. If anyone is interested, let's talk about it at our next meeting.

Here's the link to the flier.

This is good. God knows the young men need to read other things besides the newspaper in my class - Their into real stuff like sports and puzzles.
Another text that might interest people - written by a local guy ( UB prof) some might know him already. Literacy with an Attitude- Educating Working-Class Children in Their Own Self- Interest by Patrick Finn -

I return to it now and then to remind myself where to take the class when they are struggling.

Karen: Yeah, I read that book for a Multicultural class at UB. Dr. Finn came into the class to participate in my group's presentation. I remember enjoying the book, and things about Friere and a lot of theory. Everything else is kind of vague. Tough lookin kid on the cover, though.
